Snapchat is giving Snap Map a musical upgrade through a new integration with Spotify. The new feature, simply called Now Playing, lets Snapchat users display what they’re listening to in real time.
Snapchat’s Snap Map can now show what friends are listening to on Spotify
According to Snap’s announcement, Snap Map now reaches more than 450 million people each month.
The release also suggests today’s Now Playing feature will eventually expand beyond one music streaming service.
For now, Now Playing is a Snapchat feature that only works with Spotify.
After linking a Spotify account, users can see songs alongside their friends on Snap Map.
Tapping a track offers several options: open it in Spotify, save it to Liked Songs, or explore Snapchat Spotlight videos featuring the same sound.
Songs can also be saved directly to Spotify from Spotlight and Snapchat’s Sound Pages.
Music activity is not automatically shared with everyone who can see your location. Snapchat offers four visibility settings:
- Friends
- Friends on the Map
- Select Friends
- No One
Now Playing is available anywhere Snapchat and Spotify are both offered, with Canada coming soon.
Snap introduced Snapchat Sounds in 2020, allowing users to add song clips to Snaps and Stories before opening the full track in Spotify, Apple Music, or SoundCloud.
Beyond Snapchat
Spotify has also been steadily making listening more social.
Its own iOS app added opt-in Listening Activity and Request to Jam features earlier this year. Instagram previously launched a similar real-time Spotify status for Notes.
